- Pre-Conference Session
PoE Lighting and Automation for Electrical Contractors
This course is designed for electrical industry professionals seeking comprehensive knowledge of Power over Ethernet (PoE) lighting and automation systems. Developed in collaboration with the PoE Consortium — the leading industry organization dedicated to advancing PoE education, adoption, and best practices — this course reflects the most current technical standards and real-world application guidance available to the electrical trades.
PoE technology delivers both power and data over balanced twisted pair cabling and connectivity, fundamentally transforming how we design, install, and manage modern lighting systems. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of current PoE standards — including IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, and 802.3bt — and how these standards govern power budgets, device classification, and system scalability.
The course explores the integration of automated window treatments and motorized blinds within PoE ecosystems, demonstrating how lighting and shading can operate as a unified, intelligent building system. Special emphasis is placed on interoperability between PoE devices, controllers, and third-party platforms, equipping contractors with the knowledge to design and deploy systems that communicate seamlessly across manufacturers and protocols. Upon completion, participants will have the expertise needed to confidently propose, sell, and manage the installation of PoE lighting and automation systems in commercial and residential environments.
This preconference session is an additional fee of $135.
