NECA Legislative Update Top Three 3/15/19 – DOA: Trump 2020 Budget Released

Mar 15, 2019

1. President Trump’s Budget Released

On March 11,2019 President Donald Trump released his budget proposal to Congress “A Budget for a Better America”. A summary of the topline issues of the budget can be found here.

NECA’s Look Ahead:

The President’s budget in its current form has no chance of passing the House. The budget is largely seen as a political document that serves as starting point for negotiations. The significant message in the President’s budget is that the administration is requesting that Congress creates a budget that complies with the current stick budget caps under the Budget Control Act. The House Committee on the Budget is expected to mark up their own budget blueprint the first week in April.

2. Bureau of Labor Statistics to Welcome New Director

President Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, William Beach, received Senate confirmation earlier this week by a vote of 55-44. The former Vice President of Research at George Mason University will oversee 2,000 employees tasked with collecting, analyzing, and disseminating economic data.

NECA’s Look Ahead:

Beach is one of many Trump nominees whose appointments have stalled through the Senate since late last year. Beach now replaces Deputy Commissioner William J. Wiatrowski, who has been serving as acting commissioner since January 2017. NECA continues to advocate for swift processing of these nominees to fill the largely understaffed departments.
