Michael P. McDonald, President

McDonald Electrical Corporation

Hingham, MA

Boston Chapter, NECA

With more than four decades of experience in the electrical industry, Michael P. McDonald, President of McDonald Electrical Corporation in Hingham, Massachusetts, has built a reputation as both an accomplished leader and a dedicated advocate for the profession. His journey from working after school at his father’s company to leading one of New England’s most respected electrical contracting firms reflects his lifelong commitment to the trade.

A CAREER SHAPED BY EARLY EXPERIENCE
McDonald’s career began before high school, helping at PMT Electric, his father’s company. By 18, he had already earned his journeyman electrician’s license, and after joining IBEW Local 103, he quickly rose through the ranks to foreman and general foreman, leading some of Boston’s largest electrical projects.

His education included studies in engineering at the University of Massachusetts Boston and earning a certification in education from the University of Tennessee, where he also taught electrical construction courses. By age 30, with a vision to create a multifaceted contracting firm built on integrity, excellence, and execution, McDonald co-founded McDonald Electrical Corporation with his longtime friend and business partner, Tom Cooney.

MCDONALD ELECTRICAL CORPORATION
Founded in 1999, McDonald Electrical Corporation has grown into a leading full-service contractor serving Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, with annual sales exceeding $140 million. The company employs more than 450 professionals and is known for its customer-focused approach, technical expertise, and ability to deliver complex projects across diverse markets.

Its comprehensive services include power distribution systems, medium and high voltage utility work, lighting and controls, fire alarm and life safety, low voltage systems, base building and tenant renovations, and ongoing service and maintenance. The company’s portfolio spans utilities, aviation, corporate and commercial buildings, higher education, entertainment venues, healthcare, life sciences, renewables, and public facilities.

SERVICE TO NECA AND THE INDUSTRY
Since joining the NECA Boston Chapter in 2008, McDonald has remained deeply engaged with the association. He has served as Chapter President and currently represents Boston as Governor. At the national level, he has been a member of NECA’s Government Affairs Committee since 2022.

For McDonald, NECA’s most valuable contributions to the industry are in education and networking, areas that strengthen contractors and support the industry’s long-term growth. In recognition of his achievements and service, McDonald was inducted into the Academy of Electrical Contracting at NECA’s 2025 Convention in Chicago.

OBSERVATIONS ON INDUSTRY EVOLUTION
McDonald has witnessed the industry evolve dramatically over the course of his career. While electrical contracting remains dependent on the skill and labor of electricians, he points to advances in BIM, software-driven project management, and prefabrication as transformative innovations that continue to reshape project delivery.

A COMITTMENT TO FAMILY
Beyond the office, McDonald values the importance of family above all else. He and his wife, Linda, have been married for 30 years, finding joy in raising their two daughters. With one preparing for marriage and the other not far behind, family milestones remain a source of pride. Together, the McDonalds enjoy traveling, golfing, and spending time at their Cape Cod home with family and friends.
