Heli Dog Sledding on Glacier

What could be more Alaskan than dog sledding on a glacier in the summer? Take the most traditional form of travel in the North Country, combine it with one of the most modern forms, a helicopter, and you have an activity that should be experienced in every Alaska visit. This trip includes a scenic helicopter ride above the Chugach Mountains (and return), mushing (driving) and/or riding a dog sled across a glacier and meeting the athletes (the dogs and puppies) from an Iditarod veteran's kennel. Warm jacket and wind pants, along with warm-over boots for shoes are provided for all participants. This Alaskan adventure is hard to top! Take this exciting opportunity to learn about the dedicated dog sled teams of the Alaskan Huskies. Enjoy a spectacular helicopter ride into the majestic Chugach Mountains and onto Punch Bowl Glacier, 3200 feet above sea level. It is a giant snowfield on top of hundreds of feet of ice. Learn how the dogs are bred.

Guests will relax and admire the landscape as they experience this ride on the sled around the glacier enjoying the scenic peaks and valleys surrounding them. See how the dogs are trained to pull the sled, how they have everlasting endurance, how they possess an inherent drive to run, and if you pull on the brakes it’s still hard to hold them back! Dog Sledding with Alaskan Huskies is such a large part of Alaskan life and history. The Iditarod Trail started out as a mail and supply route from the towns of Seward and Knik to the interior. Part of the Iditarod trail was used as a lifesaving highway for epidemic-stricken Nome, where sled dogs were used to deliver Diphtheria Serum in 1925. It’s now known as the famous “Last Great Race on Earth” where dogs, sleds and their mushers leave from Anchorage and race to Nome.
