NECA Student Chapters Participate in Associated Schools of Construction Competition

Last week, students and faculty came together as part of the 35^th annual Associated Schools of Construction, Regions 6 & 7 Student Competition in Sparks, Nevada. Students from the Rocky Mountain and Far West regions were given the opportunity to compete in categories such as Heavy Civil, Commercial, Mixed Use and Design Build. In addition to Region 6 & 7 participation, ASC created open categories ranging from Preconstruction to Project Management, and NECA was excited to have the opportunity to sit in on the Electrical category presentations, powered by Rosendin Electric.

As part of the competition, students in each category are provided with a written problem statement from the category’s sponsoring company, with real-life practices and concepts. Over the proceeding 24 hours, students take the problems to their ‘war rooms’ and as a team, they review and collaborate to then work on creating a solution. After 24 hours, they will turn in their proposals and present their findings and suggestions to the category’s sponsoring company.

Sponsoring the Open – Electrical category, Rosendin presented the following problem to each team:

The Problem: This year’s project will be a Design-Build commercial project based in Northern California where your firm is the Engineer of Record. Student teams will be leveraging BIM for some competition deliverables as well as design recommendations specific to electrical scope. Additionally, the owner of the project is evaluating adding Solar Power to their facility and will be looking for the student team’s recommendations, as well as Cost Benefit Analysis for this aspect of the project.

Successful teams will have the ability to work as a cohesive unit, relying on classroom knowledge and collaboration to address the owner’s specifications for this project. In addition to Design Build, BIM, and Renewable Energy, students should be prepared to address challenges related to manpower availability, logistics, material commodity pricing/escalation and cash flow modeling.
