NECA welcomes former congressman Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) as a confirmed keynote speaker on Tuesday May 6 at 4:00 pm at the National Legislative Conference, Washington, D.C.


A native of North Dakota, Earl Pomeroy graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1974.  He went on to study at the University of Durham in England in 1975-1976.  He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1979.  Pomeroy’s first elected position was the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1980 before being voted state insurance commissioner in 1984.  He served as the president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners which advanced reforms to strengthen solvency oversight in state insurance departments.  These reforms were widely adopted which improved the quality of state insurance regulations.


Pomeroy was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives taking office in 1993 as a representative from North Dakota.  While in congress, Pomeroy served on the House Committee on Ways and Means and House Committee on Agriculture.  For the House Committee of Ways and Means he served on health and social security subcommittees.  For the House Committee on Agriculture he served on three separate subcommittees.  Pomeroy represented North Dakota in the capitol for eight terms before his career as a congressman came to an end in 2011.


Today Pomeroy is a senior counsel for Alston and Bird LLP.  His practice focuses on matters having to do with both legislative and executive branches of the federal government.  He also works before financial regulators at the state government level.  Pomeroy brings his 26 years of regulatory and legislative experience to this position and to NECA’s 2014 National Legislative Conference.
