2. Short-Term Continuing Resolution Keeps Government Funded through December 21

As a result of the funeral services of Former President George H.W. Bush, Congressional Leadership in consultation with the White House have agreed on a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government through December 21, 2018, thus avoiding a partial government shutdown.

NECA’s Look Ahead:
NECA strongly supports H.J.Res. 143, the two-week CR, which also includes a temporary extension of the National Flood insurance program and the Violence Against Women Act. Negotiations on longer term funding of the government will continue when Congress returns to Washington next week.

3. NAFTA Renegotiated to United States Mexico Canada Agreement

Late last week, President Trump, along with representatives from Canada and Mexico, came to a consensus on the renegotiation of NAFTA. Their treaty titled, the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) has been heralded as a much-needed fix to its two-decade old predecessor. The treaty, if ratified by Congress, imposes strong labor regulations, opens multiple economic avenues, and is anticipated to bring growth to the economies of North America.

NECA’s Look Ahead:
NECA supports the administration’s efforts and recognizes that this deal will offer our member companies a more equitable opportunity to compete. NECA will advocate for the ratification of this treaty.
