OSHA Announces SAFE Collaboration for Safe + Sound Week; Shares Online Resources

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Safety Alliance (SAFE) (henceforth "OSHA and SAFE") recognize the value of establishing a collaborative relationship to foster safety and health practices and programs to improve American workplaces. To that end, OSHA and SAFE have formed an two Alliances to provide SAFE members and the public with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect workers by reducing and preventing exposure to general industry hazards, as well as construction industry hazards.
 
In the spirit of this alliance, OSHA and SAFE are collaborating to promote the OSHA Safe + Sound Campaign during the week of August 12-18, 2019. The following is offered as a just one way for employers to promote and to celebrate the successes of businesses that have implemented, or would like to implement, safety and health programs in the workplace. During the week of August 12-18, 2019, OSHA and SAFE will collaboratively send emails each day to promote the benefits of having safety and health programs in the workplace.

Overview

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rate of worker deaths and reported injuries in the United States has decreased by more than 60 percent in the past four decades since the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act was passed. However, every year, more than 5,000 workers are killed on the job (a rate of 14 per day), and more than 3.6 million suffer a serious job-related injury or illness.
Serious job-related injuries or illnesses don't just hurt workers and their families, but can hurt business in a variety of ways. Implementing a safety and health program, however, can improve small- and medium-sized businesses' safety and health performance, save money, and improve competitiveness.
Safety and health programs help businesses:
  • Prevent workplace injuries and illnesses
  • Improve compliance with laws and regulations
  • Reduce costs, including significant reductions in workers' compensation premiums
