NECA Reaffirms NEIS, NECA 408 Standard for Installing and Maintaining Busways
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) has published a revision to National Electrical Installation Standard (NEIS) NECA 408, Standard for Installing and Maintaining Busways. This standard describes the installation and maintenance procedures for feeder and plug-in busways and accessories rated 600 Volts AC or less, and 100 amperes or more, installed above ground. It also covers periodic routine maintenance procedures for busway, and special procedures used after adverse operating conditions occur, such as short-circuits, ground-faults, or immersion in water.

Minimum safe installation requirements for installing busways are contained in Article 368 of the National Electrical Code (NEC). NECA 408 goes beyond these minimum requirements and addresses quality and performance criteria that are important to not only installers, but to construction specifiers and owners. This standard also addresses other important elements including planning the installation, securing the equipment, protection techniques, as well as workplace safety.
Busway installations are very common in commercial and industrial applications. They provide an efficient method of distributing large capacity power in both vertical and horizontal orientations. Busways are also common in machine shop environments where mutliple machines and other equipment are initially installed, but may be relocated. Busways provide flexibility and convenience for facility owners and installers. This edition of NECA 408 has been meticulously updated to include essential NEC requirements and continues to deliver the goods relative to quality and performance criteria installers and owners are seeking. Key value provisions of this standard not found in the NEC are testing methods, commissioning processes, and maintenance procedures for busways.
“NECA’s National Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS®) library has grown over the years, and as new technologies emerge, the NEIS® evolve and keep pace,” stated Michael Johnston, NECA’s Executive Director of Standards and Safety. Johnston also emphasized that “the standards are constantly providing significant value to those in the electrical designing and engineering communities. The NEIS help professionals in developing design specifications in that they reduce and often eliminate specification writing time.” NECA members know and count on the reliability if NEIS such as NECA 408. The ANSI-accredited NEIS position NECA members well in the eyes of their customers and have effectively done so for years.
