How Big Is Your Battery – Storage?

Jul 21, 2017

When a major storm hit the state of South Australia last year, the immediate result was a blackout which caused 1.7 million people to lose all power. That region has not fully restored power and continues to suffer blackouts since the storm. Elon Musk says that a massive energy storage system will make the power grid in South Australia much more resilient. The sun doesn’t always shine and the wind doesn’t always blow, but a giant battery like Tesla’s being built in South Australia will play a huge role in mitigating the lack of sun or wind in renewable power generation. Just how big is the installation going to be – FIVE TIMES LARGER than the one just finished in Southern California which is 20 megawatts, compared to 100 megawatts being constructed in Australia.

Read articles about the design-build of the world’s largest batteries:

Michael Coren recently wrote about decommissioned coal power plants being converted into “giant batteries”. The U.S. has shut down 135 power plants with dozens more scheduled for “decommissioning”. Hydrostor, a Canadian company, says coal power plants are the perfect setting for constructing the world’s largest batteries! Abandoned coal plants offer transmission lines, water sources, and industrial infrastructure for building giant air-compressed batteries for the grid (SEE VIDEO BELOW, HYDROSTOR SYSTEM). The physics can be tricky, but these facilities offer the ability to squeeze large volumes of air into a small space using electricity during off-peak hours. The pressurized air is released when electricity demand goes back up. That release is forced through spinning turbines, generating hundreds of megawatts of electricity. Repurposing existing transmission lines and water supplies saves money as well. These massive facilities will store 200MW lasting as long as 100 years - now that’s a big battery!
