Feb 06, 2017

National Electrical Contractors Association member ESCO Group and its chief executive, Ray Brown, were recognized in Safety+Health as part of the magazine’s recent feature on the 2017 CEOs Who “Get It.”

Examples of Brown’s safety leadership highlighted by the magazine include:

  • Implementing a top-down “learning organization” concept that increased employee safety involvement
  • Traveling with the ESCO Group safety department and attends crew and team safety meetings on a regular basis to ensure all employees are receiving the same message
  • Employing a “do the right thing” approach and invests in the latest technology

According to ESCO’s website, the company was founded in 1964 by Wayne Engle. It started as a small, residential electrical contractor that was run out of the Engle home. Today, ESCO Group is in its third generation of ownership and is headquartered in Marion. It has grown its business to focus on a variety of services including electrical construction, plant automation, electrical engineering and safety training.

On why safety is a core value of his organization, Brown said: “At our core, what makes ESCO successful is our people. Empowering people, providing exceptional services and delivering on promises makes up our commitment to our ESCO families. Each day, we strive to keep our promise that every ESCO family member will make it home safely.”

Brown also talks about how he tries to instill a sense of safety in his employees and how ESCO Group measures safety as an organization, among other topics.
