NIOSH Releases New Mobile App for Measuring Sound Levels in the Workplace

Jan 27, 2017

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has announced the availability of a new mobile app for iOS devices can measure sound levels in the workplace.

NIOSH officials said the SLM app, which is free, is easy to use and can give users immediate feedback.

The app provides a readout off the sound level in the workplace using the smartphone’s built-in microphone, or preferable, an external calibrated microphone. It reports the instantaneous sound level, equivalent sound level, time-weighted average and noise dose based on NIOSH and OSHA limits (user selectable). Officials believe the app could be particularly helpful to occupational safety and health trainers because they can use it to raise construction apprentices’ awareness of noise hazards and the need to protect their hearing.

The app also allows users to save and share measurement data with others through their phones’ communication and media features.
