Article II, Section 2 of the Rules of the Academy of Electrical Contracting offers several options for nominating an individual for Fellowship.

Importance of Confidentiality:

It is strongly recommended that nominations for Academy Fellowship be kept confidential. Obviously, taking a vote at a meeting of a chapter’s Board of Directors makes secrecy difficult, especially if notice of the action is included in the minutes of the meeting that are widely distributed.

A secret ballot taken outside of a regular meeting might be a better way to achieve the requirement.

A completed nomination package includes four distinct parts, as follows:

1. The Nomination for Fellowship Form must be completed online. It can be accessed at the bottom of this page. Click here for full instructions.
2. A Distinguished Service Narrative that demonstrates that the nominee has “rendered to the industry, either nationally or locally, services so outstanding and exceptional as to be beyond any normal call of duty or loyalty”. Click here to learn more about this requirement.
3. Certain Letters are required, depending upon who is endorsing a nominee (an Academy Fellow and/or chapter officer). Click here for more about this requirement.
4. A photo is required. The photo is intended to help refresh the memory of the Jury of Fellows ~ in case they may know the nominee by sight, if not by name. The photo doesn’t need to be a portrait photo ~ a casual photo is acceptable. Photos (in a .jpg format) should be submitted as an attachment to an email to Diane Jacobson ([email protected]).

NOTE: Narrative documents may be submitted separately or together. But, ALL parts are to be submitted electronically!

The DEADLINE for submitting the package to the Academy Staff is March 1 as required by the Rules of the Academy, Article II, Section 2 (c).

Knowing that people are often rushed trying to gather and complete all the parts of the nomination package, we allow some flexibility with the March 1 deadline. However, to earn this “flexibility”, the completed form and a draft of the narrative must be received by the March 1 deadline. Any remaining information must be submitted no later than March 15, unless a specific written exemption from the Academy provides for a later date.

FOR ASSISTANCE:
Secretary of the Jury of Fellows, John Grau will work with nominators to achieve their goal of submitting an acceptable nomination package for their nominee. Experience tells us that completing a detailed distinguished service narrative - beginning with a blank sheet of paper - is a very challenging assignment.

Grau is charged with the assignment of initial review and verification of the accuracy of certain information on the form (examples include membership in the Association, service on National committees, etc.) He also reviews nominations for “evidence of exceptional service”. Should he find situations where the distinguished service narrative does not appear to adequately present such “service”, he will contact the nominator to discuss ways the nomination package might be improved.

It is suggested that you submit a draft of your narrative to Grau in advance of the March 1 deadline for review and comment.

CONFIRMATION OF RECEIPT:

What does a Nominator receive from the Academy?
Following receipt and review of the four parts of the “nomination package”, the Secretary of the Jury will send an acknowledgment email to the nominator(s) advising receipt of the nomination information and promise to submit the nominee to the Jury of Fellows at the next meeting. The Academy office is charged with assembling a consistent “package” of nominees for the Jury to review. Accordingly, we may re-format or make other adjustments to parts of the package. Whether we do this or not, we will request confirmation of the final package to be sure the nominator(s) agrees with the package the Jury will review.

Phone Contact following the first review by the Jury of Fellows:<
The Secretary of the Jury will contact the nominator of anyone who does not receive unanimous approval. The Secretary can advise any nominator of the outcome of any nominee, but no communication regarding the outcome of the Jury process will be in writing. While the Secretary does not communicate with the nominator of successful nominees, any nominator may contact the Secretary via email (or phone) and he will advise of the results of the jury by phone.

NOTICE OF ACCEPTANCE:

When the nominee has successfully passed the second review process at two consecutive meetings (at least 15 months after the process was begun), the Secretary of the Jury will notify the nominee via text of their acceptance.

A formal letter from the Academy Chairman will also be mailed to the nominee (with copies to the nominators – both chapters and any Academy Fellows). These letters are mailed several days later (by regular mail) so as not to interfere with the direct communication between the Academy Chairman and the new Fellow.

We believe that receipt of this special text is the best way a nominee can learn of their acceptance into the Academy - especially if they are unaware of their nomination.

Academy staff will contact a nominator just prior to the second meeting where candidates are being reviewed to confirm the best mobile number to be used.

INSTALLATION INTO THE ACADEMY OF ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING

The letter from the Chairman will advise of installation at the next NECA Convention. The Academy Secretary will follow the Chairman’s letter with further information about the responsibilities of a Fellow, the installation, etc.
