EEI Predicts 7 Million Electric Vehicles on US Roadways by 2025

Jul 05, 2017
A new report from Edison Electric Institute (EEI), Plug-in Electric Vehicle Sales Forecast Through 2025 and the Charging Infrastructure Required, predicts 7 million electric vehicles could hit US roadways by 2025.

The EEI developed the report as a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) sales forecast through 2025, including both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles, and identified the associated charging equipment infrastructure needs. This paper identifies both the scope and scale of charging infrastructure needed to support PEVs and the different approaches to infrastructure build-out.
  • The report also predicts about 5 million charge ports will be required to support those vehicles, which it says "represents a significant investment in PEV charging infrastructure."
  • EV sales are projected to represent 7% of all vehicle sales by 2025, with the vehicles making up 3% of all cars and light duty trucks in the United States.
