- NECA Reaches $1.5 Million Goal for Political Action Committee

The Electrical Contractors Political Action Committee (ECPAC) had achieved its ambitious goal of raising $1.5 million for the 2007-2008 election cycle. NECA has exceeded the $1 million-plus threshold for ECPAC annually since 2004, making ECPAC the largest specialty contractor political action committee in existence. ECPAC is also ranked in the top 50 largest political action committees.

- Legislation to Protect Multiemployer Pensions Passed by Congress

NECA's efforts to secure emergency protections for multiemployer pension plans has been rewarded with a legislative victory. Today the Senate passed multimeployment pension relief legislation, the Worker, Retiree and Employer Recovery Act (H.R. 7327), by unanimous consent. The Senate passed legislation by unanimous consent, following yesterday's action by the House in passing the same legislation, also by unanimous consent.

Unless Congress acts in the immediate future, the 50 percent bonus depreciation included in the Economic Stimulus Act (ESA) of 2008 will no longer be available after January 1. And the expanded expensing levels for fixed assets allowed under ESA will drop as of New Years Day as well. If you were planning to purchase new equipment for your business, it could be a good idea to buy it now and place it in service before the end of the year.

For the past 34 years, certain unemployed people have been allowed to file for unemployment compensation in a state where they may never even have held a job, and states with lower maximum benefit levels have suffered for it. However, this gaping loophole in the federal regulations (20 CFR 616.6) slams shut on January 6, 2009.

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, signed into law on October 3, contains at least one beneficial provision that NECA and allies have been striving to attain — an extension of the Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction which was set to expire at the end of this year. Under the new law, the deduction is available for qualified property placed in service after December 31, 2005, and prior to December 31, 2013.
