Electrical Contractors Believe Investment in Infrastructure is a Real Opportunity to Rebuild Our Nation and Achieve Bipartisanship

Jan 31, 2018

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Electrical Contractors Association, John M. Grau, issued the following statement in reaction to President Donald J. Trump’s State of the Union address:

“President Trump simply gets it: America is a nation of builders. His call to invest at least $1.5 trillion in our nation’s aging infrastructure is an opportunity for Congress to truly work together for the benefit of the American people and our economy.

While the health care and tax reform processes undertaken last year proved to be divisive on Capitol Hill, the success of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is already proving to move our economy in the right direction. Infrastructure investment on the scale proposed by President Trump is a rare opportunity for the Congress to work together for the good of the country and the American people.

The next step Congress must take is to unleash our true economic potential by rebuilding and modernizing our nation’s electrical grid, as well as our roads, bridges, waterways, clean water and wastewater infrastructure, and building infrastructure. America suffers from a serious infrastructure investment gap and this proposal can pave the way to correcting our current trajectory.

As President Trump said, we can truly ‘reclaim our great building heritage’ by moving this proposal forward and keep long-standing worker protections in place, including prevailing wage laws, smart utilization of project labor agreements, and increasing job training through the apprenticeship model we helped pioneer over 70 years ago.

We look forward to working with the Trump Administration and Congressional leaders to review the details of the proposals and offer additional solutions to continue moving our nation in the right direction.”
